The Trees Where People Live

Trees have been a part of people’s lives since the early days of settlement. The early need for wood for homes and tools gave people a reliance on trees. The movement of people across the country did not change that need, and often trees and water were the two important resources for creating populated places.

Invest From the Ground Up – Community Tree Planting Program a Huge Success

What a Successful Planting Day! February 15th was our big day for the Invest From the Ground Up Community Tree Planting Program and it was a smashing success.  We had an amazing turnout with very few hiccups! The final numbers will be out next month, but it is safe to say that over 1,000 volunteers came out, and 1,264 trees were planted at 19 unique projects.  Some projects had multiple sites as well.  We had IFGU representatives at every site, pulling from CaUFC staff and Board, WCISA staff and Board, Epicenter Management, and CalFire.  We also had over 20 Certified Arborists (in addition to our IFGU reps who are also certified) volunteer to help out at each site, do planting demonstrations, and make sure the trees were planted correctly. The main website for the program has more information about our Partners, the goals of the program, and links to the two regions with each of the grantees and their projects.  When the trees we planted are fully grown, they will remove 53.72 tons of CO2 and 12,640 pounds of pollutants every year! Media Coverage We also saw some great press before and after the events in Porterville, Oakland, Concord, Bakersfield, and more!  Bakersfield even ran two spots on the local TV news!  A few press highlights: Kern County/Bakersfield TV news spot and article Porterville Recorder Article Contra Costa Times Concord article...

We’re planting 1,250+ trees across California in single day!

Invest from the Ground Up will plant 1,264 trees on February 15, 2014 at 19 locations in the Bay Area and San Joaquin Valley!  This event will focus on areas of high-need such as schools, sports fields, and community centers.  The SF Bay region will plant 601 trees and the San Joaquin Valley will plant 663 trees.  Interested volunteers can click here for a complete regional partner listing and locations for volunteering. Program Director Connie Gallippi says, “We are very pleased to see so many communities involved in improving their quality of life and environment.  Trees provide so many great benefits to our communities.  Whether it’s providing shade and breathable air at a community center in Lindsay, capturing particulate matter near a school in Oakland, bringing new life to downtown Bakersfield and the Kern River Parkway, or replacing hazardous trees in a park near an elementary school in Rohnert Park, these trees will be working hard for the communities they’re planted in.  Trees really are a wise investment!” Gallippi and her team have ensured that certified arborists will act as supervisors at all tree planting events, teaching volunteers about the benefits of trees and demonstrating proper planting standards and tree care. With a current drought in place, some concerns have been raised about the water needs of young trees.  It’s important to note that California historically recovers from drought with...

Drumroll Please! Our Community Tree Planting Partners Are…

Did you hear?  We’ve announced our community tree planting partners!  They’ll be part of our large-scale tree planting project on February 15, 2014 spanning the SF Bay Area and the Southern San Joaquin Valley.   Invest from the Ground Up has awarded 21 local organizations with trees, stakes and ties – in exchange, they’ll be holding volunteer tree planting events and will provide post planting care for 2 years. Our goals for this project are to increase public awareness about proper tree care and to increase tree benefits to communities.  You may recall that our organizations have held similar large-scale tree plantings in the past, under the name United Voices for Healthier Communities.  In 2007 we were planted 7000 trees in LA, Orange County and Riverside and in 2010 we planted 4000 in Central California & San Diego. Stay tuned for more information on our community tree planting page – we’ll be adding links to volunteer sign ups and more local information as the event planning takes root. SF Bay Area Planting Partners (click for more info) Canopy (Palo Alto) – Trees to be planted at Willow Oaks School in Menlo Park.
