Santee Neighborhood Tree Planting Program – A Free Street Tree for You!

Are you are resident of Santee? If so, you are in luck! The City of Santee has a Neighborhood Tree Planting Program for residents who have a public parkway in front of their home.

santee streetA Public Parkway is defined as the portion of the public right-of-way located between the sidewalk and the curb. There are approximately 700 vacant parkway sites in Santee. If they were filled in with trees, we could all be benefiting from more shade in the summer, lower energy bills and even higher property values (by up to 20%!)

  • “The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to 10 room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day.” —U.S. Department of Agriculture
  • “Landscaping, especially with trees, can increase property values as much as 20 percent.” —Management Information Services/ICMA
  • More facts about how trees benefit you!

floweringplumThe City will come out to do an inspection of your parkway to determine how many trees can be planted. You, as the homeowner, can choose from several different tree species, depending on what specific characteristics you would like in a tree. Some trees are deciduous, some have flowers, some are evergreen, some are tall and skinny—others are more umbrella shaped—you choose!  And best of all they are all drought tolerant.

All we ask in return is that you sign a Tree Planting Agreement, promising to water and care for the tree. We, the City, will take care of all aspects of tree maintenance—all you need to do is water the tree! And the truth is that in San Diego it only costs about $10 of water a year to keep a tree thriving. It’s a small investment well-worth making—the energy savings can be tree-mendous!
